Maximo allows asset managers to identify critical spares and specify exactly which parts are compatible with an asset. This can be used to ensure that the right parts are selected when replacements are needed. Maximo can also help to build this list, reducing data entry, by automatically building a preliminary list based on historical issues.

Each Item Master includes a checkbox marked Auto Add as Spare Part? By checking that box, the item will automatically be added to an asset’s spare parts list when it is issued to that asset.

Note: This option is only available for non-rotating items. Rotating items may be attached to a parent asset as a subassembly, but may not be listed as a spare part.

Over time, as parts are issued to an asset, the spare parts list will automatically be updated.

Most Maximo users prefer a combination of automated and manual control. This may be achieved by:

  • Selectively enabling Auto Add as Spare Part on an item-by-item basis
  • Periodically reviewing and editing the asset spare parts list. We recommend that asset managers incorporate a periodic audit process that includes a review of the asset’s spare parts.

While some organizations prefer to manually control and maintain spare parts lists, others, particularly those whose maintenance and asset management teams are already spread thin, may benefit from automatically updating an asset’s spare parts.
