High-quality data is critical to the success of your EAM program. If you’ve found that your historical data isn’t giving you the information that you need, it’s important to make changes now that will improve data quality going forward. Often, simple changes yield significant improvements.

Identify key metrics and associated data points. It may seem obvious, but after working with Maximo for years, it is easy to lose sight of overarching goals and become caught up in process details. Ensure that you are collecting the right information to meet your strategic asset management goals.

Validate. If you’re measuring it, standardize it. Use domains and lookups rather than free-form text wherever possible. Ensure that key data fields are required so that they are consistently entered. Use Maximo’s robust configuration capabilities to verify that user-supplied data is logically sound.

Automate. If you can obtain data elsewhere – from a related record or a connected system – do so. Minimize manual data entry to maximize both efficiency and data quality.

Simplify. Address the content and flow of key Maximo screens to make important data fields easy to identify and enter. Provide mobile applications for your field technicians so that they can capture data while in the field.

Review. Conduct periodic data quality reviews to identify issues and improve incrementally. Focus on one or two critical areas for improvement each time.
